Background

Blackheath Rugby Club is one of the most important names in world rugby. Founded in 1858, it is the oldest open rugby club in existence. The club grew out of games played on Blackheath Common in southeast London, where players shaped what would eventually become the modern laws of rugby football.

In 1871, Blackheath played a decisive role in the sport’s history by hosting and taking part in the meeting that formed the Rugby Football Union. While the club later split from the RFU over the issue of professionalism, Blackheath remained fiercely committed to the amateur spirit that defined the early game, earning it the nickname “The Club.”

Today, Blackheath competes at the top end of the English amateur and semi-professional pyramid from its home at Well Hall, Eltham, carrying forward a legacy that helped build rugby as we know it.

Community at Blackheath Rugby Club

Blackheath Rugby Club is built on more than results. The club runs a strong community programme focused on youth development, inclusion, education, and grassroots access to rugby. From junior sections and schools engagement to outreach sessions and local partnerships, Blackheath uses sport to create structure, confidence, and opportunity for young people across south east London.

The club also provides a social hub for the local community — hosting events, bringing people into the game, and making sure rugby stays accessible, not exclusive. The goal is simple: grow the sport properly, support the area that supports the club, and leave the place better than it was found.
